Relentless Flight – Timeless Path Waterfowl Moments from the California Delta
The stronger the wind, the harder the rain falls, the more relentless the flight of waterfowl becomes. They fly low to the ground, dipping, swooping, and pushing against the natural elements that would keep most of us bundled in warm protective clothing, seeking shelter from the biting cold and soaking wetness of the day.
This winter morning the flight of Pintail (Sprig) and White Fronted Geese (Specs) seemed like an endless one. Gusts of rain and South winds hit over 60 mph that morning. But the birds kept on flying.
There were always new birds approaching, birds right out front and birds traveling on. Some birds stopped to rest on the ground for several minutes, and then once again made their way into the stormy sky.
These birds were traveling along a timeless path we know as the Pacific Flyway, which passes through the heart of the California Delta where this waterfowl moment was photographed.
My camera took me closer to what I saw and felt. It helped me to focus more clearly on what I wanted to experience and be part of the moment more fully. Time stood still. I was happy. I was at peace.
Each time I look at the image you now see in front of you, my heart still resonates to the natural beauty of the birds in flight that morning and the elements of the winter storm around them. This is a waterfowl moment in the California Delta I treasure, and one I delight in sharing with you for your enjoyment.
Sincerely,
Michael Pieretti
